FB_IMG_1459896122363… about licorice! Weird, I tell ya!

As part of my Expat experience I do make it a point to try out the local cuisine. The Danes have lots of yummy foods and dishes, and their pastry is to die for! But, and there is a big BUT (and I am really on the fence about it), they have a tendency to put licorice in, or on, everything. And I do mean everything!  If you can stick a fork or a spoon in it – there will be licorice.

Here is a list of all the foodstuffs I have found with licorice in (I am talking about both the sweet and the salty licorice):

  • Sweets (of course, as this is the way licorice is meant to be eaten)
  • Chocolate
  • Ice cream (both as flavoring and sprinkles on top)
  • Cakes (I dare you to find a cake without licorice!)
  • Beer (!!!)
  • Pickled Herring
  • Marinade for beef and other meets
  • 1-ketshup
“Ketchup for grown ups with licorice”

Ketchup and other tomato based sauces

  • Salad dressing
  • Boiled veggies, like cabbage
  • Cocktails
  • Salt (yes, they put licorice in the salt and sprinkle it on their dinner!)
  • Bread
  • Puddings (desserts)
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Cured fish

Just… Weird!

      1. I believe I may have encountered them here and there in some bags of sweets my father used to bring us from the US but if they are the little black squares I never liked them 😦
Nerd as I am sometimes , I was googling to try to find a reason for Danes love for the stuff 😉 because I have this notion that people/nations tend to eat according not only to what is available locally but what their bodies need 🙂 Sorry , I can be as weird as Danes 😉

    1. I don’t drink beer, ‘cuz it’s horrible! So how much worse could it be with licorice? *giggles* But I agree on the coffee – there will be no licorice in my coffee!

    1. Yes, it seems so. In Denmark you get the really pricey artisan licorices to the more generic sweets in a bag-stuff, and you get both syrups and powders so you can cook with. Want licorice on your steak? No problem! 🙂

  1. I like licorice but not with everything, and you mentioned a lot of items. I have learnt it’s not good for people with you high blood pressure. I am going to believe, the fact that Danes have a good intake of fish, herbs and fresh foraged organic foods in their diet, it helps to balance their health in this matter. No doubt Danes will keep enjoying licorice.

    1. Yes I have heard that also , that it drives the bloodpressure up. And its mildly laxative. Yes, the Danes love their fish and it is almost impossible to get veggies that are NOT organic. And then they love their beer and fatty sauses – so I guess it all evens out 🙂

  2. I tried to imagine all what you mentioned with licorice flavor… Well, beer is a definite yeew but the rest I could easily put together. Doesn’t mean I think it tastes well =)))
